Description of Department

Trauma & Orthopaedics is a specialty that relates to the diagnosis and treatment of disorders, conditions and injuries of the skeletal system and the muscles, joints and ligaments associated with it.

The Department of Trauma & Orthopaedics in Tallaght Hospital consists of a multidisciplinary team staffed by consultant surgeons, surgical staff, dedicated nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

Our Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons provide a wide range of emergency (trauma) and elective (planned) treatment to patients. Several of these Consultants also provide services in Naas General Hospital in Co. Kildare, Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin and St James’ Hospital in Dublin.

The department has four surgeons that specialise in reviewing and treating patients with spinal disorders. Tallaght has the largest group of surgeons on the island of Ireland treating scoliosis patients, with Mssrs Noel and Moore. Mr Murphy sees patients with degenerative disease of the entire spine, and has a monthly clinic in Naas General Hospital also. All three spine surgeons see patients with vertebral compression fractures. The Back Pain Screening Clinic physiotherapists liaise closely with the surgeons in screening and treating patients referred with spinal disorders.

Trauma care includes treating fractures (broken bones). Tallaght Hospital is the National Centre for Treatment of Pelvic and Acetabular fractures. Our Orthopaedic Coordinator, Pauline Harrison is the link person when other hospitals refer patients to us with fractures of the pelvis or acetabulum (hip socket). A Fracture Liaison Service is provided by David Askin, the Osteoporosis Nurse from the Rheumatology Department for patient bone health assessments after fragility fractures.

Elective orthopaedics includes planned treatment for non-acute conditions. The Tallaght orthopaedic surgeons provide care for disorders of all joints and bones.

Our goal in the Trauma & Orthopaedic Department is to restore mobility and eliminate pain, so that patients can get back to participating in everyday life, living with confidence and maintaining independence.

As Tallaght is a teaching hospital of Trinity College, Dublin, we are committed to education in the Orthopaedic Department. The Consultants run education sessions three times a week for their surgical teams, which nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists can also attend. The Clinical Facilitator for Orthopaedics Ruth Reynolds runs a Post Graduate Diploma in Specialist Nursing course for orthopaedic nurses, in conjunction with Trinity College.

Patient Information

Trauma orthopaedic patients are usually admitted to hospital via the Emergency Department.

Elective orthopaedic patients are referred by their GP to the outpatient clinics and if admission to hospital is required then this is arranged in conjunction with the admissions department.

Patients undergoing planned surgery may be invited to attend a Pre-Assessment Clinic to prepare, and are often only admitted into hospital on the morning of their surgery (“Day of Surgery Admission”) avoiding the need to stay in hospital the night before.
